The Rights to Write Week 5

1.Can you explain what this picture is showing about collaborative learning (or group learning)?

The picture is showing the effects upon collaborative learning. For example, several students are working on a common problem; they form a group and share their viewpoints together. After brainstorming, they come up with several ways towards the problem, and they start to deliberate upon what is the best approach. At the end they reach a consensus among answers. Through collaborative learning, students learn to share opinions and to welcome different viewpoints. Also, during their discussion, they learn through reflection. They rethink their viewpoint and come up with a better idea.

2.What is your favorite part of this type of learning?

I once joined a camp called “The New Century Leaders.” During the days in the camp, I learn how to generate multiple perspectives, how to do collaborative deliberation, and how to deliver the result on stage. Among those parts, my favorite one is Generating Multiple Perspectives part. I like this part because it is a good chance to learn new ideas and various viewpoints from others. I am often worried about being stubborn and I do not like to be limited to my own thoughts. So I think that being able to look at things from a different aspect may be one of the good ways to broaden my horizon.

3.What would be the part that usually bothers you when working with others?
Give an example from your personal experience and elaborate on it.

I often feel uneasy when facing the Collaborative Deliberation part because it is not easy for me to accept others’ opinions and change my own thought at once. So that would be the part usually bothers me when working with others. For example, in the camp I mentioned above, teamwork was considered the most important part. Each group had to present their final works on the stage. I remember having a hard time persuading them to perform in the way I preferred because ten people have ten different ideas of presenting the work. I got frustrated when ten voices were running in my head. I do think that learning to think in others’ shoes will be one of the things I need to improve.

  1. Actually, I don’t totally understand each part of this picture and what it wants to express. Nevertheless, I will still try to make the possible association about the general idea coming out to my mind and give an explanation I can make.

Recently, collaborative learning becomes popular and important; we don’t learn only by ourselves. I think this picture just shows the process of this way of learning. We come up with our reflection, get into groups, posing the problem we have and we want to discuss, and then generate multiple perspectives. During the process, we can find other possible answers or ideas from we originally have. It’s possible to have deeper perspectives developing from our ideas or take an opposite stance from ours. After sharing the ideas, we discuss, deliberate, adjust and finally get a meaningful assessment.

I think collaborative learning is efficient. My favorite part of this type of learning is the part when we generate multiple perspectives. It saves lots of time. If we get stuck and cannot figure out the answer, collaborative learning guides us to think. After listening to others’ idea, we may have clearer information. Besides, I like to hear others’ opinion, and to compare mine with theirs. It’s very interesting to find that there are different thoughts like “wow, I can also think in that way” or “oh, that’s something I don’t cover and consider”. During the process, the discussion keeps inspiring our creativity and we may come up with still more ideas.

Of course, time and the disagreement are two things bother me when working with others. On one hand, it’s not easy to get everyone together since everybody has his or her own schedule. Therefore, the efficient discussion is necessary. On the other hand, it’s interesting to know different ideas but it sometimes could be a problem when taking a firm stance on certain ideas. Under this situation, the art of communication becomes important.

  3. Dear Wendy,
I think you have already got the main idea of the picture.
Time is changing, and what a company wants their employee have has no linger limited to proficiency on certain field. In stead, it is more important to have the ability of collaborate work. Here I want to share my experience in the "The New Age Leades" camp. It really helped me in collaborative learning and inspired me. During the camp, we would have group reflection time every night. We rethought what we learned during daytime and share our opinions. I was often amazed by peers' views and their opinions helped develop my multiple thinking. While formal education is our main approach of learning, collaborative learning is a new trend in education. The two ways of education focus on different purpose, so I think they are of almost equal importance, and collaborative learning worth promoting.
