The Rights to Write Week 6

How do you usually look at your mistakes?

People make mistakes, and I am no exception. I am a person who takes things seriously. So when I make a mistake, of course I will feel upset and think about the mistake I just made all day long. And I will probably keep blaming myself and regretting doing the wrong thing. But I know that it is no use crying over spilt milk. So after the terrible feeling, I always tell myself that this is a lesson to learn, and I gain an experience.

How do you define mistakes?

When I do something wrong, I always ask myself if there is anything I can learn from it. If the answer is “yes”, then I know I can be better next time, and I will try hard not to let the same thing happen again; however, if the answer is “no”, then the mistake must be a stupid one which I should not make. Thus, I will blame myself and remember the wrong thing I done for a very long time.

After listening to Prof. Pausch, do you still see mistakes in the same way?

After watching the video, I still see mistakes in the same way. I agree with Prof. Pausch on the sentence: “Experience is what you get when you did not get what you wanted.” For example, when I was in senior high, I joined a Chinese speech contest. I was so confident then, and was sure I would win. However, when that very day came, I had a cold, and the worst was that I draw a topic which was the only one I had not prepared. Therefore, I lost the contest. I was so upset because I could not believe I would lose. After several weeks, I finally released myself from the sad mood. If everything is just so easy to do and achieve, then people make no progress. And of course those things will not become the so called experiences since there will be nothing new to be discovered nor will there be things deserve remembering. I learned the lesson in a hard way, and the memory of losing the contest became the most unforgettable experience I ever had.

  1. It’s impossible for us to make no mistake in the whole life. Just like how most people feel, I will also be upset and annoyed when I make mistakes. Sometimes it's just not that easy to get over from the negative feeling; however, just like what you said, “It is no use crying over spilt milk”, too much regret and sadness cannot change things happened. Therefore, I will try to think in a positive way and see if there is anything that I can make up or learn after “crying out loud”!

Just like the “brick wall” that Prof. Pausch mentioned in the clip, I think mistakes are kind of like those brick walls around us. Mistakes are obstacles for people to success while mistakes are bridges for people to success at the same time. I believe that making mistakes is one of the fastest ways to learn because the strong feeling of upset and depression make these experiences unforgettable. Also, the result coming with the mistakes may be serious enough for us to remember. Therefore, we will try to learn something from the mistakes and make improvement. For me, I even think that it’s good for us to make mistakes as much as we can when we are young. On one hand, we are young enough to take the mistakes, have courage to face the results and not to feel shameful and stressful when making mistakes. From my observation, I find that people have less courage to try and to make mistakes with their growing ages since they are afraid of others’ views. They think that others will laugh at them. On the other hand, under the situation that learning something from it, more mistakes means more experiences. Nevertheless, if we cannot grow with the mistakes and keep making the same ones repeatedly, mistakes become the obstacles. If so, the problem might be we ourselves.

Yes, I think I still think mistakes in the same way and I gain more ideas about it. I agree with the two sentences which Prof. Pausch said, one is that “Experience is what you get when you did not get what you wanted” and the other is “Brick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things”. For the former one, I cannot agree with the idea you share more, “If everything is just so easy to do and achieve, then people make no progress”. The more impressive mistakes we have, the more things we can learn and the more improvement we will make. For the later one which impresses and inspires me, it gives me power again. People who have passion with what they want and can really stick to their dream will finally get to the other side of the wall.

  2. The sentences you quoted from Prof. Pausch are also my favorite ones. Their meanings are simple, but I didn't realize them until I saw his last lecture. Things are not always complicated. In fact, it is we ourselves who take it too seriously to understand the truth lying in those that weigh heavily on us. Take myself for example, I always want to make a marked progress in English. But since I take it too seriously, it becomes my biggest pressure. There are times I even turn away from English. After watching the video, I realized the more I love English, the more I care about my progress. So now I think it is a blessing that I have opportunity to do English works, for I understand the more works I've done, the more I would learn.
