The Rights to Write Week 11

1. Based on your preference, what kind of classroom activity do you like most and which one do you like the least?

The classroom activity I like most is watching and the one I like the least is reading. I think the reason why I like reading the least is perhaps because my reading speed is slow, and it always takes me a lot of time to read through materials and to understand the text. I often get impatient when I can not finish reading quickly. So it is obvious why I like watching. Watching provides sound and images, and therefore I can understand the meaning right away, or at least more quickly than by reading.

2. Can you recall some very fun activity you experienced recently in class? Please describe it.

I still vividly remember the time we spent in the computer room 216 to have our composition class. In the class, Dr. Chen, the lecturer of our English composition classes, taught us how to make a short video with Move Maker. And our group chose to modify a penguin video to a funny one. We learned how to cut and edit the film, key in new lines, make special effects, combine sound, images, and words together and at last uploaded the output. We did a good job and the video came out really funny. This was the first time I learned English through hands-on activity and I love it very much!

3. When encountering some kind of difficult knowledge, do you have any strategies to process it?

Actually, I don’t have any strategy to overcome difficult knowledge. When I encounter difficult knowledge, I will search some information on the Internet and try to combine them or I will choose to ask teachers. I am looking forward to find my own strategies to overcome difficulties in learning.

4. Based on your responses to Q1, Q2, and Q3, can you tell the type of learner you are? Why?

I think I am a learner who prefers to learn new things through watching and hands-on activities. Learning by watching enables me to understand what the lecturer wants to convey easily and by hands-on activities enables me to take part in the process of production and therefore, I will not easily forget what I learn.

  1. dear Heidi,
I'm so surprised with your sharing since it seems that we have something in common!(haha)Actually, this topic is also what I am learning in one of my selective courses, teaching children. With the better improvement and the newer concepts in this generation, I think thinking about “types of learner” becomes more important for teachers to make their lesson plans. Actually, this kind of concept was raised in early Chinese period by Confucius-teach students according to their aptitude and interest. In the course I take, we are taught seven kinds of students based on the categories of the aptitude. For instance, someone is talented for oral expression, someone likes to act out, someone is quiet and introverted, tending to do reflection instead of expressing his or herself in front of other, someone is good at logics or linguistics, someone has a talent for arts, drawing and so on. How to design a proper lesson plan for them is what we are learning because we believe that it is the most efficient way for students to learn.

I think I am a learner who wants to put what I learn into practice and like to learn by sharing. Based on my preference, in the class activities above, I like hands-on and watching the best. In this way, I can feel that I participate in the class more and it won’t be so boring in the class since I am really doing something which is interesting and can be applied to real daily life. Also, I like to learn by watching. Watching is a more relaxing way for learning and we always have discussion after watching something. I think this is really an efficient way for me since I am forced to think and brainstorm while watching. I will learn something, come up with some ideas or questions, then can share with others and learn from the discussion again.

However, I don’t like reading the least. I can’t pay constant attention to a long reading for too much time unless it is the one I like. Therefore, it’s very possible for me to get distracted from what I read and that may not be a suitable ways of learning for me. When encountering some kind of difficult knowledge, I will go ask for help from my classmates or instructor; I think asking question is the fastest way to get the solution and answers.

  3. Wow, Wendy, we are in sync!
I agree that after watching a video, the discussion time is always exciting since brainstorming often brings new ideas to my mind and I am surprised to know there are so many different viewpoints about one thing. Watching is the first step to new things, and discussion helps me to clear my thoughts about the new ideas, organize them into sentences, and then I can fully express myself.
I often think that reading efficiency has something to do timing. If I just don’t feel like reading, then no matter how much time I spend, I still don’t understand what I’ve been reading. However, if I really feel like reading a book, I can spend a whole day concentrating on the lines and won’t feel tired. I also find that most of the time I don’t feel like reading during daytime. Perhaps that’s why I don’t like reading in classes.
